Teaching Assistantships

Teaching assistantships are available to upper-level undergraduates for Chem 345 and Chem 100 classes. Pay ranges from $1,002 per session per semester to $2,005 per section per semester. More information can be found here.

Undergraduate Research Stipends

Summer research fellowships are available through the College of Arts and Sciences and many professional programs. We encourage you to ask your advisor for more information about these programs.

Departmental Scholarships

The Department of Chemistry awards more than $45,000 in scholarships to our majors every year.  To be eligible for a departmental scholarship, you must complete the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Scholarship application form.  Applications open in early December and close at the end of January for the subsequent year.  Multi-year scholarships require renewals each year using the same form.  Available departmental scholarships include:

Art & Helen Brunstad Scholarship

Awarded to outstanding science majors with financial need.

Beverly Casebier Memorial Scholarship

Scholarships shall be awarded to continuing students who are completing their sophomore or junior years at Washington State University. The recipient should be a declared major in chemistry and should have demonstrated an outstanding academic record (minimum GPA = 3.0) and commitment to a career in science. Awardee must be a US citizen. The award should only be made if there is a qualified and meritorious candidate.

Julian Culbertson Scholarship

Funds provide for student scholarships and fellowships, student and faculty research and enrichment of the curriculum and program in chemistry.

Edwin Fankauser/Guthrie Edward & Dipaolo Beth Scholarship

Awarded to a certified Chemistry major in Jr or Sr year from Columbia HS [Richland HS] (preference) or the Tri-Cities area (next choice) or Eastern WA.

Melvin J. Gortatowski Scholarship

Undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry and in need of financial assistance.

Hach-Chemistry Teacher Scholarship (administered by the American Chemical Society)

Awarded to chemistry majors working toward becoming a high school chemistry teacher,  Award amounts up to $10,000/year. Can be awarded to chemistry students enrolled in WSU’s Masters in Teaching program or post graduate teacher certification classes. May be competitively renewed up to six years by completing a yearly College of Arts and Sciences application.

Edwin Hart Chemistry Scholarship

Support for undergraduate education on the basis of academic achievement

McFadden/Yount Undergraduate Scholarship in Biochemistry and Chemistry

General undergraduate scholarship for students majoring in Chemistry.

Harvey K. Murer Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship fund was established to provide scholarships for undergraduate students in the fields of chemistry, biochemistry and chemical physics.

Stephen Rayner Scholarship

Undergraduate student majoring in Chemistry. Minimum award of $1,000.

Ellen & William Shelton Endowed Scholarship

Junior and senior students who have an accumulated gpa of 3.00 and in need of financial assistance.

Bud and Joan Simmons Scholarship in Chemistry

One scholarship per academic year to an undergraduate student with a certified major in Chemistry.  Recipients shall have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and have demonstrated financial need.  Preference shall be given to students from Washington State.

Gardner Stacy Research Endowment

Can be used to support research in organic chemistry and support of students at any level majoring in the field.
